Order of the day

Meire is definitely in the order of the day. Not that she was really here last night, but her presence during the dreaming session — even if for Mr. Adriano Conselheiro's eyes only — is enough to make me wonder. I think back to all that has happened to me since I left home and first set foot here in Taurinos.

I now remember I was not 100% concerning my disposition and health when the phone rang that day. I even thought of having lunch, avoiding interviews with prospective clients without much substance. Was I lying in my bed when the phone rang, as Bruno suggested?

I am definitively back to the farm Taurinos. Not that I had quitted Renan's case, it was just that I came to the conclusion there was nothing in him to be fixed. What was related to me as problems was now in fact a living part of him. It was nothing exterior that had affected him; it was more like something that should have been seen somewhere in the past and was now inalienable part of him. Trying to modify him is the same as to try to get a banana-tree to produce grapes instead.

And now Meire, in Adriano's visions. If I had any doubts about her being real, the question about Paulo had cleared them all. Paulo's name has never been mentioned here, people were always so amazingly discreet never asking me about him.

I'm sure I'll find something extraordinary around here. Something I have never dreamed of before besides all — that was not little — I have already lived here. The stillness of these days foreboding something that comes, insidious, secret, mingling with the background without wanting to be noticed. The fact I have never remembered what I did on the arena that day. Never, not a single scene, flash, a sign that could remind me of something so extreme I did there.

At master Danilo's, the aroma of coffee and the usual attention of a man in love with the simple pleasures of conversation.

"Renan said something meaningful to you, "sá" Stella. From all you have told me about, I think it is more important than your friend appearing in Adriano's visions, you know?"

"What, for instance?"

"He said he was exactly the way you dreamed."

"What do you mean? What is so meaningful in it?"

He wouldn't answer. I was thinking of whether I had been neglecting something on the way. If I really hadn't missed one detail or two. Strange phrases that orbited me, events much too weird, as though everything here wasn't strange enough since I first came to town. My involuntary inclusion on the list of Taurinos' Ancient Society, creating a link with the town that wouldn't come broken any longer. Something that forces to remain here, all for the benefit of a town that I simply didn't know the existence of in the beginning of the year.
